Sometimes the design of the entire piece is cued by one key detail.
In this case it's the Tusk, the vertical peg on the outside of the trestle leg. The tusks secure the low horizonal stretcher in place - and essentially hold the whole piece of furniture together. It's a traditional joinery technique, developed before the days of drills & drivers & wood glue.
Shown in quartersawn white oak, salvaged from the City of Baltimore.
